The Student Core of the RUSH Center for Excellence in Aging seeks to provide opportunities for students to learn, volunteer, and develop skills to improve our work with older adults. The Student Core welcomes students of any health profession, including health sciences, nursing, and medicine.

Educational Opportunities

The Summer Academy on Aging offers students of any discipline an opportunity to learn from RUSH

The Summer Academy on Aging offers students of any discipline an opportunity to learn from RUSH faculty about how to engage in age friendly care. Topics addressed include Agism, Psychology of Aging, The 4M’s of an Age Friendly Health System, and more.

The Academy on Aging is a 6-week non-credit course, offered at no cost to students.

Schaalman Student Fellowships, The Schaalman Senior Voices Fellowships offer an important educational opportunity to students and faculty to enhance our mission of creating the nation’s leading age-friendly health system.

Residencies at RUSH, Psychiatry residents have inpatient rotations in geriatric psychiatry for six to eight weeks and a monthly lecture series in the second year of residency.

The Ohana Program is an interdisciplinary student volunteer program that aims to place volunteer companions for end-of-life or chronically ill hospital patients at RUSH University Medical Center who are without family or friends at their bedside. The program is sponsored by the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Palliative Medicine. The role of the volunteer is simply to be present with the patient so that they are not alone. Time commitment for volunteers is minimal and scheduling is flexible for visiting patients.
